There are a few songs within the Indian hip-hop industry that deserve special attention. The songs that define a whole generation and tell the stories that are close to our hearts. One such highly anticipated track is ‘Chorni’, which is a collaboration between the late great vocalist Sidhu Moose Wala and Vivian DIVINE who is the face of Indian rap.
Sidhu Moose Wala and DIVINE Chorni Song Review
Released posthumously, ‘Chorni’ was originally composed before Sidhu Moose Wala’s untimely demise and was planned to be released in 2022 along with DIVINE’s third studio album, “Gunehgaar.” The track was on the tracklist, but DIVINE and Sidhu’s team wanted it to be a significant addition to Sidhu Moose Wala’s legacy, so they delayed the release to make it more of an event.
The fans were already very excited for the track to come out, but when DIVINE played it on his recent Mumbai show in order to continue his streak of paying tribute to the icon on stage, it took the internet by storm with all the clips going viral. However, when the rapper dropped the official audio of the track, it evoked a public outcry due to the altered beat and poor audio quality. DIVINE and his team immediately realized their mistake and dropped the original version of ‘Chorni’ from Sidhu Moose Wala’s YouTube channel with an incredible music video on July 8th, 2023.
As soon as the song dropped, it hijacked the charts, peaking at #2 on YouTube within a few hours of its release. The song begins with Sidhu Moose Wala’s vocals, he says — ‘Thaapi humesha jor aale da chann hundi ae, Jeeh ‘te jor hunda ohi maarda, Te asi iyun hi maarde rahange jinna chir jor rahunga’ — And as the beat drops, he jumps on his verse with well-placed shots at the government and system, reminding us of his fearless personality.
With solid lyricism, infectious flows, and powerful delivery, Sidhu’s part followed by the chorus, really charges your spirit with his rebellious energy. The lyrics emphasize the musician’s fierce presence with each line — from ‘Chadhai ae agg layi ae, Sidhu shabdan ch puche taan tabahi ae/ Oh teri gully ya mohalle da bhai nai, eh Punjab toh Moose ala bai ae’ to ‘Putha paida ae maarha khaira ae, oh Malwe da jatt jatvaida aa ae/Bollywood di comedy ala scene nahi, goli maithe vich maare bada bhaida ae.’
The instrumental of ‘Chorni’ produced by DRUGS BEATS, Mex Manny, and Navjosh Singh really adds to the ferocious vibes of the song. The beat feels like a statement in and of itself thanks to a Lata Mangeshkar sample from the 1982 song “Chorni Hu Mai Meri Surat Pe Na Jana” and blazing percussion.
The earlier version of the track had a different verse from DIVINE, but after Sidhu Moose Wala’s unfortunate passing, the rapper decided to rewrite his verse to pay a poignant homage to the GOAT. With each bar of his verse, the Mumbai-born demonstrates Sidhu’s impact on his life, as he raps — ‘Moosa Nipsey, Pac, Moosa, Nipsey, Pac/Seekha maine inse, what is real hip-hop’. DIVINE continues to impress, rapping — ‘Kuch saath mein na laaye, wo paisa hi kya hai jisko saath mein na khaaye/Awaaz mein hai dum, ye hai Bombay likhayi’. He closes the track with the infectious hook that grows on you.
The accompanying official music video is well-executed and showcases the team’s hard work. With realistic VFX and incredible video editing, it feels really grand and makes you experience Sidhu’s charismatic aura. “Chorni” is more than just a song; it represents the sentiments of millions of people. Such was the power of Sidhu Moose Wala that a single like ‘Chorni’ still affects the world he left behind. With this unforgettable tune, Sidhu’s legacy will endure, and we will continue to be inspired by his voice and timeless music.
